  • Waters of the Seneca River and the Erie (Barge) Canal surround the 3,100 acres of Howland Island. The land was first settled and cleared for farming in the 1800s. Farming continued until the 1920s. The land was purchased as a game refuge in 1932 and became a Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) cam   from trails.com
